Wildfire discussions continue with UFU/NIFRS meeting Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) representatives met last week with Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) senior commanders and wildfire lead specialists, on the Glenshane Pass. Wednesday, 9th June 2021, 8:30 am UFU hill farming chair Nigel McLaughlin said: “The meeting with NIFRS was requested of the back of the wildfires that took place several weeks ago on the Mourne Mountains, the result of which caused devastating damage to the local environment and habitats, and also impacted our members who farm and live in the area. “We had a constructive discussion with NIFRS, and it was very encouraging to learn that they are aware of the issues associated with the wildfires, particularly the massive increase in fire load. Farmers have been managing hills and uplands for generations and these very large-scale wildfires have unfortunately become more common in the past few decades.

NI farmers welcome changes to wool haulage charges 6 May 2021 | Co-operative Ulster Wool said this week that it will abolish wool delivery charges Sheep producers have welcomed Ulster Wool’s decision to get rid of onward carriage fees at all approved collection sites from this season. The farmers co-operative announced this week that it will abolish wool delivery charges Northern Ireland has only one grading depot located in Muckamore, County Antrim. The volume of wool Ulster Wool receives from farmers is crucial to sustaining the depot. An Ulster Wool spokesman said: “In order to further support producers we are enhancing the service offering with onward haulage charges at all approved collection sites, from this season, being abolished.”

£3m aid package to counter low wool and sow prices in NI >More in © Adobe Stock Sheep and pig producers in Northern Ireland are set to receive more than £3m later this year in compensation for poor prices related to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Agriculture minister Edwin Poots has confirmed sheep farmers who have been affected by poor wool prices following the crash in the global market will receive up to £1.27m in financial support. And pig producers are set for a £2m payout to compensate for last year’s collapse in the cull sow market. “Over the past year, I have met with representatives of the sheep and wool sectors on a regular basis to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the global wool market,” said Mr Poots.
