The eruption on white island happened just after 2pm local time. One tourist who was leaving the island, filmed the eruption as it sent a thick plume of ash and smoke into the sky. Other footage showed a group of visitors inside the crater. New Zealand Police say that around 50 people were on or near the island at the time, including travellers from overseas.
