A small but significant portion of Oregon tenants were unable to pay rent on time in January or make up their missed payments during the month, a sign that more renters may be taking on debt as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
Nearly 1 in 5 renters in the Portland area, and a slightly smaller share statewide, had not paid their rent by Jan. 6, according to RealPage, a company that provides property management software. Most made up their missed payments by the end of the month, but roughly 7% of Oregon renters still had not paid their rent by Jan. 27, according to the company. ....

State and federal lawmakers help thousands struggling to pay rent

Since the start of the pandemic, Jan Remund and her 100-year-old mom have so far been able to make their monthly rent payments on their Bend home.
That’s in part because her daughter-in-law works at the rental company that manages her home and was able to negotiate a lower monthly rental payment.
But Anna Lariza Lopez and her family haven’t been as fortunate. When Gov. Kate Brown shut down restaurants in March, Lopez lost her job at a La Pine food truck. Her husband, a landscaper, is heading into the slow winter months. It’s been a rough ride for the Bend family of three. ....

Hundreds More Affordable Housing Apartments Underway in Bend

Stillwater Crossing breaks ground; meanwhile, Stevens Road sale goes through, adding even more housing
A project that could very well be Bend s biggest affordable housing project to date is now underway.

The site is north of Ponderosa Street along Atwood Drive, parallel to Highway 97. Planning for the project began in 2019, and Wishcamper closed on financing in September.

Oregon now appears on track to allocate $63.5 million in rental assistance by end-of-year deadline

Oregon now appears on track to allocate $63.5 million in rental assistance by end-of-year deadline

The state says it is on track to allocate the entirety of its $63.5 million in rental assistance to Oregon tenants in need by the end of the year and won’t have to return any of the money to the federal government.
That’s a dramatic uptick from two months ago, when local agencies still had most of the money and appeared in danger of missing the Dec. 30 deadline and forfeiting the federal dollars.
A new report from Oregon Housing and Community Services, the state agency overseeing the rental assistance program, shows that 93.5% of the funds had been committed to specific households by Dec. 10, putting the state on track to meet the end-of-year deadline. ....
