Nick Grabbe: Fact-checking letter about Amherst Published: 4/14/2021 2:38:20 PM The letter from Paul Cohen in the April 7 Gazette (“Let’s take charge of Amherst, again”) contains several factual errors. Referring to the two five-story buildings at the northern end of downtown Amherst, Cohen writes, “Our town meeting would never have allowed this to happen to our town.” In fact, those buildings were approved when Amherst still had Town Meeting, before it was replaced with a Town Council two and a half years ago. He also writes that “money poured into the vote on government change and we got the change,” and he implies that much of this money came from developers. In fact, charter opponents were the big-money donors, with seven donations of $500 or more, with the largest $1,000, while all the contributions to the pro-charter group were less than $300. Contributions under $50 made up just 16% of the anti-charter fundraising, compared to 54% for the pro-c ....
