While the coronavirus pandemic dominated the headlines in Weymouth in 2020, it was also a year that saw a great deal on the development front, including the compressor station coming online, a groundbreaking for a new Chapman School, the new Tufts Library opening and a changing of the guard at Union Point.
In January, the Southfield Redevelopment Authority board of directors voted unanimously to name Brookfield Properties as the new master developer for Union Point, the 1,440-acre former air base in Weymouth, Rockland and Abington. Brookfield Properties, partnering with New England Development and Tony Green, is the fourth master developer to oversee the troubled project since the base closed in 1995. The latest, LStar, was ousted in 2019 amid accusations of infighting and financial mismanagement.
