As we dive into the topic of local School Boards and todays education debates, first, tell us about your group and its mission. Guest well, the National School Boards Association really represents our state associations of School Boards, and theyre the ones that have the membership of the local School Boards. Local School Boards are comprised typically of folks out of the community who have an in Public Education. So while theyre usually elected, some are appointed. Typically elected, most frequently not paid, so they do this as a civic duty. And because they have a concern about good Public Schools in their communities.

One is theres a changing social compact between companies and the work force and companies are increasingly looking for individuals who have some important technical skill which is why Stem Education is so important. We were fortunate to see an 8. 6 increase in our enrollment of students in engineering programs and i think students are realizing that skrg these skills is important because its what employers are looking for. If we believe that the ranking excuse me, the ratings system is a de facto ranking, which i, in fact, think it will become, we know hispanic students dont use rankings. In fact, around 16 of latinos cited in harrys own data, that rankings were an importantpa z factor in their choice process. Completion happens before the student never enrolls in college. Two issues from the Texas College success or lack of success. The first is growing latino demography. There is also the case12 Public Schools where latinos comprise the majority of all Public School students. Problems not that there is a growing latino demography, the problem is the growth in High School Graduates has not translated to enrollment in colleges and universities. With black students, its slightly different but no less important. We have seen an increase in enrollment for the black population. It is worth raising that is an roman is not translated into completion. Far from it, its a clear example of how success on one side of the pipeline does not translate to the other side. Instead, we see in a previous arer the black students overwhelmingly going to Community Colleges as a First Choice Institution which is likely to decrease their College Completion.
