The psychology of post-pandemic life — why you might feel anxious about re-entry


We ve survived countless pandemics. There have been about 20 pandemics in the past 200 years and we ve survived them all. So most people will bounce back.

Some anxiety is normal
Initially, Taylor expects to see a range of reactions, from exuberance and hypersociability to anxiety as people cautiously — or not-so-cautiously — resume regular life.
Taylor said it s normal to feel some trepidation about returning to our normal routines and increased social interaction. After all, we ve been told that proximity to others comes with risk for more than a year. ....

Corona has taught us to keep our distance while still staying in touch in other ways. Handshakes and hugs are a distant memory. But we can t do without physical contact forever as previous pandemics have shown.

Physical closeness to other people seems almost unimaginable at this point. Will we come back to it?
Maintaining your distance demonstrates empathy and respect for others. It s a way of protecting strangers, as well as friends, family and ourselves.
Yet it simultaneously feels wrong to cross the street to avoid contact with others. We refrain from hugging friends and family at parties, when reuniting after a long time apart, and in general. We even shudder when we see crowds of people in movies, all while we are longing for closeness. ....
