Panic on the streets of Newtown – the circus lion escape of 1892


TWO lions escaped their confines during the final show of Newtown s April Fair in 1892.
It had sent more than 50 people running for their lives and none had slept in Newtown that night with calm only restored the following morning.
The travelling circus had pitched up at Penygraig on Milford Road with Lorenzo, one of the most renowned animal trainers in the country, and his menagerie of wild beasts the star attraction.
All had gone well throughout the daytime performances though by the evening the mood in the tent had changed.
While the public could not get enough, the animals were becoming frustrated and the bears had refused to perform several tricks. ....

It s that mail order shopping industry, now worth billions, which was inspired by a little known 19th Century Welsh draper who lived in the middle of nowhere and left school at 12.
Pryce Jones could only dream of the impact his entrepreneurial vision would have on the world when he was selling Welsh flannel to Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale in the late 1800s. ....
