Also the 2,400 homes destroyed. a great number of those were destroyed, not just damaged. it s very extensive, the damage and devastation that we re seeing here. today was a day where a lot of people returned to their homes, homes that are no more. a cold downpour accompanied residents of moore, oklahoma, as they returned to the destroyed homes for the first time since the tornado. patterson drive looked nothing like they remembered it. on the way here, i ve seen so much other damage. pardon me for this. she lived here with her husband, two small children and two dogs. they evacuated but left the dogs behind. you re in our bedroom. reporter: the damage is devastating, but there s so much gratitude in this family, they weren t hurt and that their dogs survived. where did you find the dogs? inside the bathtub. so they survived by jumping ....
We have learned 2,400 homes have been damaged by the tornado in the oklahoma city area, 10,000 have been directly affected by the storm. the mayor of moore tells cnn his city has gone from rescue and searching to recovery. the death toll from the tornado now stands at 24. dramatically lower than first indicated. but the none is still tragic. nine children lost their lives. tonight we re learning a bit more about one of those children. janae hornsby. she died along six of her classmates at the plaza towers elementary school, a building now almost completely flattened. the stories of those who survived are just starting to be heard. i had to hold on to the wall to keep myself safe because i didn t want to fly away in the tornado. we had to pull a car out of ....
Trouble. we know they ve been without medication now for two days, which is scary in itself. we re just very, very worried. and just to go over the chronology of their movements, what we know is they left their home in the heart of moore to go to a funeral in the neighboring town. the church service ended i believe at 2:30. everybody at the funeral saw them leave, and it was believed they were heading back to moore? that is correct. they left the funeral home about 35, 45 minutes away at 2:30, between 2:15 and 2:30. and we don t know if they made it back to moore before the storm hit. or not. so at this point, we we re not sure if they re in the city of moore somewhere, or if they re somewhere between moore and maysville. we have tracked back and forth. numerous family members trying ....
Can you bring me up to speed on that? what we have learned is there are approximately 2,400 homes here in moore, oklahoma, that have either been damaged for destroyed. i will tell you a very high percentage of the them have been destroyed. these are destroyed homes. people today started coming back. a lot of them didn t know what to expect when they saw their homes. as you can imagine, there was great sadness. one of the most interesting parts of the story is perhaps i see it as the headline while it s a great and a terrible tragedy that 24 people have died. the mayor of this city is saying that he does not expect the death toll to go higher. with the amount of damage that we ve seen here and the number of years i ve been covering tornadoes and seen damage like this, i really would not have been surprised whatsoever if the death toll got into the hundreds. the fact that it s 24 is pretty amazing. it s very sad that it s not higher. ....
