Doom and gloom, let s make sure the news coverage acknowledges when things go right. with me in new york catherine rampell and cnn s oliver darcy. welcome to you both. we talked a lot about bad news bias and i think this is one of those examples. when the website actually works, not much attention, everybody kind of just moves on. if it had crashed, oliver, can you imagine we would be in wall to wall coverage. there is a negativity bias when it comes to the press. we are always focused on what did not work, what s going on wrong and that s not to say we shouldn t focus on those things, but it s important when something does go right, when covid cases are down, things are on the upswing we reflect that and give people an accurate portrayal of what s going on in the country. a lot of this relates to the economy. do the doom and gloom perceptions, do they match reality? it s interesting. if you look at the consumer ....

Existing in covid coverage? i do. i would say if you re not a member of the media, i think it s important to keep in mind we in the media have a real bad news bias. some of that is healthy. we re confronted constantly with spokes people and corporations and politicians and athletes who are trying to tell us how everything is wonderful and perfect. so you really want us to have a certain skepticism, but we often go too far. so what that means is good news, when cases are declining or vaccines are working, tends to not receive very much attention and bad news receives enormous attention. when you re listening to covid news, just remember it s coming through this filter we in the media often have this bad-news bias. so dog bites man, man bites dog, the vaccine has been actually amazingly successful. it led a lot more people to be vaccinated than previously had been vaccinated. not that many people quit or got fired because of it. of course, we tend to hear more about the outliers. they ....

Why because we need to focus on the true risks that their taking and wearing masks all of the time does come with down sides with people who are hard of hearing, it makes any conversation just difficult for two people to have. there is a reason why we didn t wear masks all of the time before this. wearing masks makes communications difficult for minority of people and making breathing more difficult when exercising. it is really hard on people without perfect hearing which is a sizable chunk of americans so we don t want to be going to permanent mask wearing. we need to weigh the cost and benefits and focusing people on this is what you need to do to protect yourself which is one, two, three, get vaccinateds and four if you re not vaccinated, when you re indoors go social distancing and wear masks. so if we conflate what are tiny risks with real risks, we end up confusing people and think we in the media have a hard time with that because we do sort of have this bad news bias i know yo ....
