A note on Memorial Day
As a teenager experiencing the anxiety of not knowing a second language well enough to pass the New York Regents Exam Foreign Language component that would enable me a smoother passage into a post high school arena of the college experience, I was granted an opportunity by my mother s employer, Pan American World Airways, to study overseas during the summer and early fall of 1966. The immersion program not only taught me how to interact with people on a rudimentary conversational level, I learned how language defines a culture; language is culture.
