IT is not without absolute glee that the first news item I read on Friday morning was that the loathsome former president of the United States had been convicted in his New York City trial for falsifying business records as part of an organized scheme to bury unflattering news stories about him during his 2016 campaign for the presidency. Given how the trial had proceeded over the past six weeks, an acquittal by the 12-person jury would have been incredibly shocking, but that did not make the anticipated outcome any less delightful. It was perhaps even more so because it was as forceful a decision as the jury could possibly make it: conviction on all 34 felony counts being tried and delivered in less than two days, or about half the time even the most optimistic legal experts expected jury deliberations to take.
