Council group chief declines to make statement on Powys 'honours for votes' claim

NO statement on the claims that a councillor was offered a nomination for an honour in exchange for support on the budget, was made at today’s Powys County Council meeting.
Opposition group leaders had urged Powys’ Conservative group leader Cllr Aled Davies, to make a statement on the issue following claims made by Cllr Gwilym Williams.
But, as the meeting agenda has been set several days ago, it is down to the council chairman, Cllr Gwynfor Thomas, (Llansantffraid – Conservative) whether a request of this kind is allowed or not.
At the meeting Cllr Thomas, said: “We are dealing with business today, and I remind members that we are in the pre-election period. ....

Powys opposition leaders' anger over £1.8m Covid fund

OPPOSITION leaders have lambasted the handling of a controversial £1.8million Covid Recovery Fund, which will be partly used to mend potholes on Powys’ roads.
Opposition leaders had hoped to scrutinise the £1.8 million pot, and the Labour leader on Powys Council had attempted to call in the application for further discussion by the committee he chairs.
However, this was declined, on the basis that senior council officers said it did not meet the criteria set out in the authority’s constitution.
Now a meeting to discuss that decision with council chief executive Dr Caroline Turner has also been declined – although a meeting with all council group leaders about wider issues is to go ahead – leading opposition groups to release an angry statement. ....
