Join Friends of the Cabildo for a screening of the Louisiana State Museum’s collection of seven different 16mm film reels from the 1970 Jazz Fest on Wednesday, April 24th. Screened in the third-floor performance space of The New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint, the FOC Film Series highlights the best films and documentaries that showcase New Orleans and Louisiana. One night only at 6:30 p.m., Jon Pult will moderate the event with the Band-In-A-Pocket Jazz Trio performing live during sections of film without sound.
The cultural life of New Orleans is a synthesis of contributions by both whites and Blacks. The white American heritage with its roots in French-speaking Cajun society is reflected in the business and commercial life of the city, while the immigrant heritage Irish societies, German Oktoberfests, Italian St. Joseph’s Day altars adds ethnic colour to urban conformity. The African American heritage is particularly rich. In antebellum days, free persons of colour were musicians, poets, journalists, business entrepreneurs, and landlords. Nickel-A-Dance returning to Frenchmen Street in June
Nickel-a-Dance, a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts held each spring and fall is returning to its longtime home, The Maison music club, after a long hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. Free concerts will be held every Sunday from June 6-27 from 4 to 7 p.m. The series attracts a diverse group of fans who gather to celebrate jazz as America’s original music as performed by the best of today’s classic jazz bands.
