Feds, Oneida County settle voting rights suit for 2020 election errors


The Oneida County Board of Elections won’t be party to a protracted legal battle after agreeing to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
The settlement, announced by the Justice Department on Monday, will bring resolution to a voting rights lawsuit connected to the 2020 election. The Justice Department announced it intended legal action on March 23 before working with the county board of elections to find an agreement. 
The settlement requires the Oneida County Board of Elections to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure all timely submitted voter registration applications are reviewed and processed under the National Voter Registration Act. The board also will train all poll officials and election personnel in provisional ballot requirements dictated by the Help America Vote Act.  ....

US Sen. Gillibrand announces bill package aimed at lowering drug costs


The time has come to lower prescription drug prices in the United States, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, said Thursday afternoon at a news conference in Utica.
“As New Yorkers face growing health challenges and economic hardship in the wake of the pandemic, they are being forced to make decisions between picking up their drugs and buying groceries or keeping the lights on,” she said. “And while people struggle to access the medications they need, the five largest pharmaceutical companies in the country are making tens of billions of dollars in profits.”
The pandemic has proven the urgency of the issue, she said, pointing out that prices increased for 860 prescription drugs last year. ....
