Through its legal counsel, Gila Regional Medical Center refused Monday to honor a formal Inspection of Public Records Act request filed by the Daily Press on Nov. 23 without providing a required written status letter within three days of receiving the request.
Separately, however, the hospital updated the newspaper this week regarding conditions at the facility as COVID-19 numbers continue to rise in Grant County. 
The New Mexico Department of Health replied in a timely manner to a similar IPRA request from the Daily Press, indicating it would respond within a 15-day limit set out in state law.  ....

New Mexico activates ‘crisis care’ standards for hospitals overwhelmed by covid

New Mexico on Thursday suspended all nonessential surgeries and activated “crisis care” standards, a move that clears the way for a system of rationing amid a coronavirus surge that has overwhelmed the state’s capacities.
Under the twin orders by the state’s health department, elective surgeries will be banned until Jan. 4. Health-care providers, meanwhile, will be permitted to begin implementation of a statewide plan for stretching the state’s increasingly scarce health-care resources. The system ultimately could allow doctors to determine which patients receive care, depending on who is likeliest to survive. ....

Six people from Chaves County including four from the same long-term care facility were among the 67 deaths related to COVID-19 reported Tuesday and Wednesday by the New Mexico Health Department.
An internet outage among state offices on Tuesday delayed that day’s update until Wednesday afternoon.
A local woman in her 80s was among the 33 deaths in Tuesday’s report. She had been hospitalized, had underlying health conditions and was a resident of the Mission Arch Center, 3200 Mission Arch Drive.
In Wednesday’s report, five local deaths were reported among the 34 in the state. Three were residents of the Mission Arch Center a woman and a man both in their 70s and with underlying health conditions, and a woman in her 90s. ....
