Rutgers Mature Attack: Three Unique Paths Led Charalambides, Kirst, Mullins to 2021 Success

Tuesday April 13th, 2021 8:00am (Photos Courtesy Rutgers Athletics) There wasn’t a team as explosive and fun to watch as Rutgers through the first month of the college lacrosse season. And after another electrifying win against Penn State last weekend, it doesn’t look like the 2021 version of the Knights are slowing down. The Scarlet Knights, unranked preseason after a 2-4 2020 campaign, have showed a relentless offense that put tremendous pressure on opposing defenses. They gutted out the first win against Penn State in a marvelous debut for Connor and Colin Kirst, the brothers who transferred from Villanova and Lehigh, respectively. Then, they poured it on against Ohio State and Michigan with identical scorelines, 22-12, the next two weeks.

With two seconds left, Connor pulled up from about 15 yards out with no one on him and fired a dagger into the Penn State net, tying the game and providing a huge momentum boost into the decisive final frame of the Scarlet Knights’ 11-9 season-opening win. It was a moment the brothers haven’t experienced together since before Colin was in high school. “It was pretty surreal. It’s been a number of years since that’s happened. I think my seventh- or eighth-grade year,” Colin said. “I got some chills just thinking back to our old Somerset Hills Warrior days.”
