According to a release from New Iberia Main Street, Main Street America and its partners announce the list of accredited programs each year to recognize their exceptional commitment to preservation based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach. In 2020, Main Street America programs generated $4.14 billion in local reinvestment, helped open 4,356 net new businesses, generated 14,988 net new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 8,488 historic buildings, and clocked 983,702 volunteer hours, the release states.

Built in 1937, the Essanee Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 as a contributing resource to the Downtown New Iberia National Register Commercial Historic District (NRIS 100001710). The period of significance for the Downtown New Iberia Commercial Historic District was 1870 to 1967.
