WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The New Hanover County Schools Board of Education heard plans tonight to reduce suspension rates in its schools.
Julie Varnam, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, gave a presentation on the plan for management of student behavior in schools.
“The goal, of course, is to maintain as much face-to-face instructional time with students as possible, so really addressing the root cause of the behavior is the more proactive and positive response as opposed to removing from an instructional opportunity,” Varnam said. “So I think we have a collective combined agreement on doing that with our youngest of learners is going to likely change their trajec ....

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The New Hanover County Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to remove the name of former volleyball coach Ron Strickland’s from the Hoggard High School volleyball court at an interim meeting Tuesday night.
Strickland was recently accused of decades-old sex crimes against two students. On January 14, 2021, New Hanover County Schools notified law enforcement after a tip was discovered on social media; Strickland was removed from his duties January 15, before the end of the most recent volleyball season. ....

Cooper urges schools to resume in-person learning, won't commit to vaccinating teachers earlier

On Tuesday, Gov. Cooper urged all 115 school districts across North Carolina to resume in-person learning in grades K-12 this month. He pointed to data and science released recently as promising and safe for students, teachers and staff to return to classrooms: K-5 in Plan A, and middle and high school in Plan B.
“We’ve learned much more about this virus since last March,” Cooper said. “It’s time to get our children back in the classroom.” ....
