Jersey City rally sparks debate over 'F--- the pigs' chant

Jersey City rally sparks debate over ‘F - the pigs’ chant
Updated Apr 19, 2021;
A Saturday rally in Jersey City sparked debate after video circulated online of marchers shouting “F - the pigs,” apparently at police officers stationed on the street.
A video clip of roughly 100 protestors shouting the slogan as they approach a Jersey City Police Department vehicle drew criticism from Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who called the chant “inflammatory + infectious rhetoric which only further divides us” on Twitter.
“Obscenities being hurled at police officers who risk their lives every day is unacceptable, we should agree this isn’t an appropriate way to express grievances + it undermines calls for change,” he wrote. ....

Dr. John Sygielski, president of Harrisburg Area Community College, wrote the following on his Facebook page on Thursday:
Got a call from a Black HACC student asking to drive him to work because he was afraid. Established a phone tree of drivers to assist him until he feels ‘safe’ to drive alone, again. I have never before received this request from a White student. Have you?
The post reflects the stark reality of our times. Many Black people are afraid. Mothers are afraid for their Black sons who would simply like to live life and pursue their dreams like everyone else. ....

A Jersey City restaurant ended its silence on claims and a video that showed an apparent racist double standard for Black and white customers, but the statement has only made some community leaders angrier.
In a post on Instagram, the popular Ashford said it is “anti-racist” and “has a multi-racial ownership group, a multi-racial staff, and serves a multi-racial community.”
The Downtown eatery had drawn scorn from the community in the past over an initial dress code that appeared to be aimed at keeping out Black customers. The issue was revived Saturday when Charles “CJ” Pace, a 25-year-old Black man, was told he and friends had to eat outside because his “joggers” violated the restaurant dress code. ....
