DOJ Deports Former Nazi Camp Guard Back to Germany

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced over the weekend that it has sent a 95-year-old former guard at a World War II concentration camp prison back to Germany.

Friedrich Karl Berger was ordered removed from the United States in February 2020 for his participation in 1945 as an armed guard at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp system in Germany.
“Berger’s removal demonstrates the Department of Justice’s and its law enforcement partners’ commitment to ensuring that the United States is not a safe haven for those who have participated in Nazi crimes against humanity and other human rights abuses,” Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson said in a press release. “The Department marshaled evidence that our Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section found in archives here and in Europe, including records of the historic trial at Nuremberg of the most notorious former leaders of the defeated Nazi regime. ....

WASHINGTON: A 95-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard who has been living in the United States was deported on Saturday to Germany, the Justice Department said.
Friedrich Karl Berger, who had been living in Tennessee and had German citizenship, was deported for taking part in “Nazi-sponsored acts of persecution” while serving as an armed guard at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp system in 1945, the department said.
“Berger’s removal demonstrates the Department of Justice’s and its law enforcement partners’ commitment to ensuring that the United States is not a safe haven for those who have participated in Nazi crimes against humanity and other human rights abuses,” said Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson. ....
