Photo Credit: Yonatan Sindel/Flash90 Supreme Court President Ester Hayut arrives at a hearing on Netanyahu s appointment of Ofer Akunis as Justice Minister, April 27, 2021. The government convened on Tuesday for a zoom debate on the appointment of a new justice minister, a position that had been vacant for several months, in violation of the law. A week ago, some three weeks after Benny Gantz’s temporary appointment as justice minister had expired, the High Court informed the government that it must appoint a person to the position immediately. The chief justice, Esther Hayut, is due to head the panel of judges hearing the petition, with justices Neil Handel and Yitzhak Amit. The petitioners argue that the recent decisions to raise the number of Israelis permitted to return to 3,000 a day and to cancel the Transportation Ministry’s exceptions committee, which considered requests to return, do not render their previously filed appeal moot. They say the government actually permits far fewer than the daily limit, and that when the ceiling was set at 2,000 the maximum number of people actually permitted into the country never ....
