6 detainees from Guantanamo Bay have been transferred. They are now in uruguay after being held by the u. S. Government for 12 years without charge. The six are the first guantanamo detainees to be transferred. Four syrians, a tunisian and palestinian were among them, hold as suspected alqaeda affiliates since 2008 and cleared for release until 2009. The u. S. Government could not find a country to accept them as refugees. We are told why uruguays president agreed to take them in. This is a personal campaign by the outgoing present of uruguay. He was a prisoner for 13 years under the military dictatorship that governed uruguay and feels this from the heart. He says they have what it calls a moral obligation to take in people from other countries who suffered.
