Scholarship winners announced | News, Sports, Jobs

The Ohio State University Extension of Washington County announces the winners of the annual 4-H College Scholarship Awards. Each applicant must be a high school senior or college freshman and a 4-H member for at least three years.
Funding was provided by the Washington County 4-H Endowment Committee through funds housed at Marietta Community Foundation.
Two winners receiving $500 scholarships are:
Kesselyn Bigley, daughter of Jessica and Joe Kidd and Jason and Emily Bigley. She is a member of the Salem Liberty Homemakers and Lower Salem Boys 4-H Club. She is a senior at Marietta High School and plans to major in Animal Science or Livestock Production and Management at an undecided university/college. ....

ALLIANCE The University of Mount Union Department of Music invited Maestro Eduardo Valdes, former principal tenor at the Metropolitan Opera and Mount Union alumnus, to host a master class April 10.
Peyton Zamarelli a soprano from Beloit performed the piece “Batti, batti o bel Masetto.”
The event consisted of 10 vocal students performing and working with Valdes in front of a distanced live audience. Each student was able to sing with him for 25 to 30 minutes at a time. The students believe that even in a short amount of time that their technique had grown substantially.
“This was an absolutely amazing experience,” Zamarelli (’22) said. “Not only was it a complete treasure to hear live music again, but my voice felt completely transformed after working with Maestro Valdes. He is a true master of his craft.” ....

ALLIANCE The University of Mount Union hosted its annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day in a hybrid in-person/virtual model April 20.
SCHOLAR Day is traditionally a campus-wide, day-long event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students.
While still adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols, Mount Union provided limited in-person attendance to the poster and formal presentations, while still offering a livestream option to those off-campus.
. Tucker Cope III, a civil engineering major of Columbiana, was selected for work on a poster titled “Sustainable Erosion Control System.”
. Bailey Balderson, a public relations major of Alliance, was selected for work on a poster titled “RSM for U-M-YOU.” ....

MCCTC students assist with Go Baby Go Youngstown | News, Sports, Jobs

CANFIELD  On April 24, 22 children received ride-on cars that were adapted to compensate for various mobility needs courtesy of the Magic of Michael Foundation and dozens of passionate volunteers.
The event, called Go Baby Go Youngstown, is in its 6th year of modifying ride-on cars for mobility-impaired children in the community.
Prior to the event, students from the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC) began their work on the project. STEM students used their graphic arts expertise to design custom license plates for each car based on the child’s favorite colors, characters, and other interests. Engineering students from the MCCTC began set ....
