Print Weeks after the November election, former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer continued to solicit and collect donations for his favored charities and projects, adding to what already was the highest-grossing year for such efforts in his six-plus years in office. According to disclosures filed with the San Diego City Clerk, Faulconer reported $122,822 in behested payments after San Diego voters selected Todd Gloria as their next mayor. Behested payments are contributions made by third-party donors at a public official’s request. State law requires that such cash and in-kind gifts be disclosed so the public can see who is donating money to a public official’s favored cause. ....
Recent graduates of a local business accelerator program competed in Union Bankâs third annual start-up pitching competition on December 18, and out of nine contestants, three entrepreneursâall women of colorâwon the contest and were awarded funding for their companies. The event was the latest held by Connect All @ the Jacobs Center, an accelerator dedicated to minority-owned companies. Contestants completed a four-month training program, and then had just five minutes to pitch their ideas in a video presentation to a panel of judges. The first-place winner is Anahi Abe-Brower, founder of Worthy Picks, a line of reusable utensils, straws, toothbrushes, and other household goods made out of sustainable materials such as bamboo and organic cotton. Abe-Brower won $7,500 to support and expand her business. Her products can be ordered through her website and are also found in local boutiques, like Pigment. ....
SAN DIEGO – San Diego’s premiere Black theatre, Common Ground Theatre, is proud to announce its 2020-21 season, filled with virtual and outdoor performances around the theme of “Raising Our Consciousness to a Higher Level.” In partnership with Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, Common Ground Theatre’s season seeks to provide a “common ground” for people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to participate, interact, connect and share their love of theatre. Every month from December through June, Common Ground Theatre will highlight Black voices through short play readings by Black playwrights from San Diego and around the United States. San Diego Considers Cutting Short-Term Rentals by Half In a bid to address concerns about vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods, the San Diego Planning Commission recommends cutting the number of short-term rentals in the city in half. Beyond the disruption the short-term rentals bring with a revolving door of strangers, they destabilize neighborhoods and reduce needed permanent housing supply, Reginald Jones of the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation told the San Diego Union-Tribune. They should ultimately be banned from residential areas. Homeowners and renters have both expressed concerns about the effects of short-term rentals on neighborhood character and the rental market, citing Airbnb and its ilk as a major driver ....
