Stages dark, actors scattered, and plays cancelled, postponed, or reimagined as Zoom productions: This has been the bleak reality for DC’s theater scene during the past 14 months. Though some mainstays like Shakespeare Theatre Company and GALA Hispanic Theatre were able to secure waivers from the mayor to host occasional outdoor and/or socially distant performances, most theaters pivoted to online formats and scrambled to find creative ways to keep their audiences (safely) engaged. Frederick Douglass traveled down from Rochester, New York during the Civil War determined to get a meeting with President Abraham Lincoln and he succeeded. A year later, the roles were flipped, and Lincoln wanted to see Douglass. These two meetings are the core of playwright
Richard Hellesen’s
Necessary Sacrifices, which Ford’s Theatre is presenting as a radio play directed by
Psalmayene 24. From Douglass’ extensive published efforts, we know some of the history of of what those two spoke about, including specifics about Black Union soldiers, but thanks to a mostly clever script,
Craig Wallace’s deep baritone as Douglass, and ....

Ford's Theatre Has Brought In Sheldon Epps to Make It a Hub of Diverse Programming

Sheldon Epps needed a play. It was 2013, and the man who killed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin had just been acquitted, sparking widespread outrage and intense conversations about racism in America. As artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles, Epps knew he had to find a way to respond to the issues stirred up by this shooting. But how?
Then Epps, a longtime theater and television director, had a flash of inspiration. Maybe his way in was through the trial the jury that had decided to let Martin’s killer go. So he decided to stage Reginald Rose’s psychologically complex 1954 play,  ....
