When Alex Trebek passed away from pancreatic cancer in November 2020, he left big shoes to fill for the next permanent host of “Jeopardy!” The show has not yet decided who will be the permanent host, and instead, it is offering an ongoing series of guest hosts the chance to audition for the top spot.
I’ve been a fan of Jeopardy! for many years, regularly tuning in and organizing my daily schedule around the show, particularly in the doldrums of the pandemic. With Trebek’s absence, what he brought to the show has been emphasized, as guest hosts sometimes struggle to adapt to the rigors of the fast-paced show: his pacing, pronunciation fans are particularly fond of his pronunciation of the word genre and even how smoothly he responded to contestants’ correct and incorrect answers.

Uncasville resident John Prokop has been a fan of “Jeopardy!” for as long as he can remember. In fact, before he was a regular viewer of the Alex Trebek-hosted game show, he recalls catching a few episodes in the 1970s hosted by Art Flemming.
For Prokop, the chance to appear on the show has been a long time coming. Auditioning for the show since 1995, Prokop s most recent attempt in September 2020 via Zoom which could have been his eight or ninth try, though he’s “lost count” is the one that earned him a spot on the show.
