Child rape cases, covering various forms of penetrative assaults, have increased by 96% from 2016 to 2022, according to an analysis of NCRB data by child rights NGO CRY. The rise is attributed to improved public awareness leading to more reported cases of sexual offenses against children.
The status report released by the CRY deep-dived into various government reports such as the NCRB 2022, UDISE+ 2021-22 and NFHS-5 (2019-2021); and focused on three main aspects of rights of the girl children education, protection and health and nutrition.
In another case, a police constable, identified as 30-year-old Sanjay, working at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s home office, was set on fire by his lover, Rani, at her JP Nagar residence. Sanjay, who was being treated at Victoria Hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The accused, formerly a home guard and currently employed with a security firm, is now under investigation.
Electrical short circuit is a major reason behind fire incidents. In SGPGI case, it seemed to be internal overloading of OT equipment, says director electric safety, GK Singh.
