Northwestern North Carolina trails offer hikers long-range views


EDITOR’S NOTE: This feature appeared in the March 10, 2021 Wilkes Journal-Patriot as part of its series of articles on the trails of northwestern North Carolina.
North Carolina’s 1,120-mile-long Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) corridor stretches from the top of 6,643-foot Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockey’s Ridge on the coast.
About 700 miles of the trail are complete, including a 44-mile section from the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and U.S. 421 at Deep Gap in Watauga County to the Parkway’s Devil’s Garden Overlook on the Wilkes-Alleghany county line.
This 44-mile section mostly weaves in and out of Wilkes County where it borders Ashe and Alleghany counties. It’s never very far from and often crosses the Parkway, yet allows something approaching a feeling of wildness due to the surprisingly wide Parkway corridor. ....

For a man who loves history as much as Davidson County Planning and Zoning Director Guy Cornman, it s fascinating to listen to him spin tales of his family s history and see how it all circles back to him, Davidson County, community planning and a pandemic.
He ll dot the last i  and cross the last t in his career s history on Dec. 31 when he retires from his position as the county s planning and zoning director and begins living the plans he has mapped out for retirement.
The Fayetteville native rolled into Lexington at age 4 in 1959 when his father was hired as the plant manager at the former Edgewood Casuals, a shirt manufacturer. This wasn t the first time his family had walked the ground of Davidson County or had a hand in the planning of the county s future. That began with his maternal grandfather, Karl Sloan. ....
