A DWI charge for Judge Tim Smith is among the top 10 stories of 2020

A former N.C. District Court judge is on the opposite side of the bench with a pending driving while impaired charge that marred his 2020 election bid to keep his judicial seat.
Former Judge Tim Smith of Duplin County was charged in January with misdemeanor driving while impaired after being pulled over on N.C. 41 outside of Trenton for alleged erratic driving. According to previous Daily News reports, a standard roadside sobriety test was performed and it was determined Smith was allegedly impaired by a substance other than alcohol. ....

Shanahan resigns from commissioner seat and Republican Party to decide vacancy

A seat on the Onslow County Board of Commissioners is now officially vacant.
William Shanahan formally resigned from his seat on the board Tuesday in preparation for his transition to his new judicial duties as a District Court judge.
Shanahan said he will be sworn in as judge on Jan. 1 and he wanted to submit his resignation to allow enough time for the appointment of someone to fill the vacancy before the commissioners begin planning for the upcoming year.
“I wanted to submit my resignation early so that the process of (filling the vacancy) can be completed before the board’s goals workshop at end of January or early February,” Shanahan said. ....
