The cleaning of storm water drains in Karachi is in full swing, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) claimed on Sunday following the looming threat of cyclone Tauktae hitting Balochistan and Sindh in the coming days.
According to the authority s spokesperson,14,900 tonne of garbage had been removed from the Mahmoodabad drain so far, whereas 153,031 tonne of garbage had been disposed of from the Orangi drain and 73,550 from the Gujjar Nullah. ....

KARACHI: A meeting held at the Chief Minister House on Saturday to discuss the cyclone emergency was told that starting Tuesday, Karachi may experience dust storms, thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah has declared an emergency in all the districts located along the coastal belt to take precautionary measures for meeting any untoward situation, and ordered the removal of all the billboards in Karachi as a precautionary measure.
“Emergency should be declared in all the districts along the coastal belt of Sindh, while a control room should be established at the chief secretary’s office to maintain close coordination with all the districts in respect of their requirements and for issuing them necessary instructions on behalf of the government.” ....

Cyclone Tauktae likely to intensify in 18-24 hours

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Saturday night warned that Cyclone Tauktae is likely to intensify further during the next 18-24 hours.
In an advisory posted on its website, PMD said that Tauktae may transform into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) during next 18-24 hours.
It is expected to move further in the northwest direction and reach Indian Gujarat by the afternoon/evening of May 18.
It said the cyclonic storm has tracked northwestward at a speed of 18km and at 2100 PST it lay centered near latitude 14.5N and longitude 72.8E, at a distance of about 1,310km south-southeast of Karachi. ....

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Department) on Sunday announced that Cyclone Tauktae is moving away from the country s coastal belt and is not likely to make landfall. 
The cyclone is turning away to the southwest direction, said the PMD s Director Sardar Sarfaraz. Though the cyclone is intensifying, it will pass by Pakistan s coastal belt without touching it.
Since the cyclone is turning away from Pakistan s coastal areas, it is no longer expected that Karachi will receive torrential rains, he added, stating that however, the south-eastern Sindh areas are expected to receive rainfall. ....
