A driver ran the main gate at North Island Naval Air Station early Wednesday and crashed into a raised security barrier, prompting security guards to close access to the base for about an hour.
A second vehicle also impacted the raised bollard, said Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs Officer Kevin Dixon.
The incident caused a miles-long traffic jam and prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue an advisory as traffic backed up on the San Diego-Coronado bridge and on southbound and northbound Interstate 5.

By 7:30 a.m., the main gate of the base was reopened and traffic into and out of the base resumed.
