As the beginning of the womens Suffrage Movement. However, it took until 1920, over 72 years later, for women to earn the right to vote. During those years, organizations such as the National American womens Suffrage Association and National Womens party would form, creating a national movement. Yet, it was women in every community who lead the effort in their towns and states to demand rights. Through the work of cspan cities tour, we will introduce you to some of these women who dedicated their lives to this cause, from a pro suffrage newspaper publisher in oregon, to a 23yearold montana and arrested for protesting on the white house lawn. You will learn why western territories and states were on the leading edge of the movement, and you will hear how a letter from a mother to her son would help lead to the ratification of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Im going to show you around the rightfully hers exhibition today which is at the lawrence f. Bryan gallery. Before we head into the gallery, i want to talk about this particular that is out in the lobby in front of the entrance. It has a photograph of the 1913 womens suffrage march. Looking a pennsylvania avenue towards the United States capital. It is overlaid with a photograph from the 2017 womens march from pennsylvania avenue as well. What it was is a lenticular, which has a special effect so that as you walk by, the image changes between the two and we really wanted to have it in the exhibit to help grab the publics attention and also to signal that this is a historic exhibit but one that continues to have contemporary relevance today. Up next, we take you inside the u. S. Capital south where historical math and we knew ski is artifacts and photographs to trace the history of women in congress. This is the first of the two par program. The story of women in Program Begins with Jeannette Rankin who was elected to the house and 1916 from montana. Shes elected to the house for wears before women have the right to vote nationally. In a way, shes really a bridge from the Suffrage Movement to women attaining full prep political rights. She was active in a National Woman suffrage organization. She helped get women the right to vote not only montana but a couple of states west of the mississippi. She runs in 1916, shes elected to one of montanas two large districts. Part of a platform that shes a pacifist. She sworn into the house on april 2nd, 1917 and the house has come into special session.
