Kuskokwim River Ice Conditions

Kuskokwim River breakup is underway, and the National Weather Service RiverWatch team is flying the Kuskokwim to survey the ice conditions. The crew took their first flight on May 3. On board was our guest, National Weather Service Hydrologist Celine Van Breukelen, who shares what the crew observed.

NWS RiverWatch Prepares For Kuskokwim River Breakup

Kuskokwim River breakup has begun. The ice went out in front of Nicolai in the upper river last week, and ice in several tributaries has cleared as well. Next week, the National Weather Service will send a crew to fly the river and survey ice conditions. This crew is part of RiverWatch. One of its members, National Weather Service Hydrologist Celine Van Breukelen, joins us on Coffee at KYUK.

Concerns Raised over Possible Flooding in Western Alaska

A heavy winter snowpack along the Kuskokwim River could make flooding likely this year in western Alaska, a federal weather official said.
“I’m especially concerned about the lower villages” along the Johnson River, a tributary of the Kuskokwim, National Weather Service Hydrologist Celine Van Breukelen said.
Her comments came Monday as more than 50 federal, state and local officials and others took part in a teleconference discussing breakup, the term for spring snow and ice melt in Alaska, KYUK Public Media in Bethel reported.
Van Breukelen worries about the tundra becoming saturated with snowmelt, and the water not having anywhere to drain. ....
