PUCSL to issue NVQ3 Level certificates to 45,000 electricians in Sri Lanka within two years


The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has launched a program to provide National Vocational Qualification (NVQ 3 Level) free of charge to trained electricians island-wide from last March.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the National Vocational Training Authority and the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.
Accordingly, 2500 electricians covering all districts of Sri Lanka will be certified in the first phase. About 900 electricians in 09 districts have already completed this training and are eligible to obtain the NVQ3 certificate.
“We launched this project from the Kurunegala District. We hope to complete this project very soon even in the midst of this Covid pandemic, by very carefully adhering to all health regulations of the Government,” Chairman of Public Utilities Commission Janaka Ratnayake said. ....

PUCSL new Chairman assumes duties; launches its work plan for 2021


The Annual Activity Plan 2021 of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), the electricity sector regulator was unveiled today. A total of 111 projects based on service quality and consumer rights protection in the power industry, water service industry and petroleum industry are to be implemented this year.
Projects related to the electricity industry have been formulated under four main objectives suCh as improve productivity and convenience for electricity consumers, supplying electricity at affordable prices to the consumer and maintaining a sustainable financial position for licensees, improve the safety of every living being and properties of the general public, licensees and operators, improve environmental conditions for humans, animals and plants. Four special projects will be implemented this year to expedite the resolution of electricity consumer complaints and disputes. ....

COPE asks SLBFE to repatriate stranded Lankan workers with its cash pile


The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has instructed the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to explore the possibility of repatriating migrant workers affected by COVID-19 by using its own funds.
COPE Chairman MP Dr. Charitha Herath made the suggestion when the Committee met to discuss the special audit report on the current situation in the field of foreign employment.
The Committee inquired whether there were any legal impediments to the repatriation of Sri Lankan workers from various countries by using the funds of the SLBFE, amounting to Rs. 14 billion.
SLBFE Chairman Kamal Ratwatte said that there was no obstacle to repatriating foreign workers registered with the Bureau at its expense. ....

Electricians decry moves to close PUCSL


Says around 20,000 electricians have already taken steps to obtain license
Says electricity mafia is behind moves to close down PUCSL
 The Sri Lanka Association of Electricians (SLAE) points out that due to the closure of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), the National Electrician Licensing Scheme implemented under the leadership and coordination of the Commission will also be deactivated.
The Electrician Licensing Scheme has been prepared with the approval of the Government to provide recognition and a career ladder to electricians in this country. At present nearly 20,000 electricians have taken steps to obtain these licenses. Another 25,000 electricians are expected to apply in the future.  ....
