PHOTO: FILE ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance on Tuesday claimed that the economy would maintain its recovery pace despite the third wave of Covid-19 and it tamed inflationary expectations by forecasting 8-9.5% inflation reading for April. “With timely measures taken by the government to tackle the third wave of the pandemic, risks are mitigated, thus better prospects of economic growth are visible,” said the ministry in its monthly Economic Outlook bulletin. ....

As part of the efforts, the government has formed a nine-member committee to set up a new price-fixing method for 17 commodities, declared as essential commodities. This move aims to allow the government to have more authority in fixing the prices based on the international or base prices of the widely consumed items. A total of 17 food items have been declared as essential commodities. These include onion, garlic, lentils, chickpeas, dried chilies, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, seeds of coriander, seeds of cumin, ginger, turmeric, bay leaves, edible soybean oil, edible palm oil, sugar and edible salt. ....

According to a report by Geo.tv, the minister was addressing a meeting of the National Price Monitoring Committee. During the meeting, the minister reviewed the prices of edible goods being sold across the country. He also looked at the weekly report of price hikes. Representatives of the ministry of food security also briefed Abdul Hafeez Sheikh about the current wheat stock in the country, the report added. ....
