The Transnet s National Ports Authority has confirmed that the chief engineer of the bulk carrier, Eaubonne, died of a heart attack.

Covid-19: Cargo ship from India quarantined in Durban port after 14 crew test positive

A cargo ship travelling from India has been quarantined after 14 crew tested positive for Covid-19 at the port of Durban. 
In Gqeberha, a cargo vessel from Mombasa, which was destined for India has also been placed under quarantine after some crew tested positive. 
The vessel master of the ship in Gqeberha could be facing criminal charges after allegedly failing to disclose that a crew member was ill. 
A bulk carrier cargo vessel from India is being quarantined at the port of Durban after 14 crew members tested positive for Covid-19, while another vessel from Kenya is under quarantine at the port of Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape, for the same reason.  ....

Government's powerships deal under fire in parliament


Officials from the department of mineral resources & energy (DMRE), without minister Gwede Mantashe, appeared before a parliamentary portfolio committee on Tuesday to brief it on the Karpowership contract to supply power from vessels to South Africa.
The meeting followed calls by various civil society organisations and energy experts questioning the viability of the powerships in South Africa considering the massive cost to the environment and the operating costs associated with them.
Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, 15 civil society organisations including environmental group the Centre for Environmental Rights and shareholder activists JustShare wrote to committee chair Sahlulele Luzipo calling for public hearings to be held over the decision to award Karpowership three of the eight winning power bids. ....

Energy Department says 20-year contracts for floating powerships will keep prices down

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has defended using 20-year power purchase agreements in a programme aimed at quickly easing the country s electricity supply constraints, saying they will keep costs down. 
Energy analysts have questioned the length of the agreements, in particular with regards to Turkish company Karpowership, which has bid to moor five powerships and three gas ships at three SA harbours for two decades. 
A top departmental official likened the 20-year agreements to paying off a bond, saying the projects would be unaffordable if the contact lengths were shorter.  
Top officials from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy have sought to defend the 20-year power purchase agreements SA is offering companies to quickly ease electricity supply constraints – including a group that supplies floating powerships. ....
