Some Arab employees of Jewish-owned businesses risking jobs by joining strike

May. 19, 2021 The timing of the general strike called in the Arab community on Tuesday – immediately after the Eid al-Fitr and Shavuot holidays – brought tempers to a boil among a number of Jewish employers and their Arab employees. When Aya Baidusi, an engineer at an architectural and construction company, informed her boss she would not be coming to work because of the general strike in the Arab community, she didn’t think it would cost her her job. Baidusi wrote to Victor Ben David, the owner and CEO of Benda, on Monday: “Shalom Vicky, because of the situation they declared a strike, so I’m not coming tomorrow to work in the hope that the situation will be better.” Thirteen minutes later Ben David answered her: “What’s the connection between the strike in the Arab community and work in the office? Thank you very much for the period you worked at Benda, I wish you success in the future.”

New guidelines give greater protection to sex-crime victims in Israeli courts

Jan. 20, 2021 Israel s Supreme Court President Esther Hayut published new guidelines on Wednesday for how the courts should conduct themselves in sex crimes cases. One decision is that such cases shall be heard before a mixed-gender panel and that the plaintiffs shall be escorted by a court security detail from the moment they enter the courthouse until the moment they leave it. They will also be able to watch the proceedings on a screen in a separate room so as not to have to encounter the defendants. These procedures will go into effect on March 1 and also apply to proceedings that got underway before that date.

Israeli employer won t sign labor agreement with Palestinian workers

Follow Jan. 14, 2021 Palestinian employees at the Yamit Filtration & Water Treatment plant in the Nitzanei Shalom industrial zone adjacent to the Palestinian city of Tul Karm launched a general strike on December 31, after the company’s owner and CEO, Ofer Talmi, refused to accede to their demands for a collective labor agreement. For its part, the company said it has agreed to salary increases and other benefits through individual employment contracts with the employees in accordance with Jordanian law prevailing in the West Bank. The concessions follow a series of strikes and labor court litigation over the separate employment terms that Israeli and West Bank Palestinian employees have been subject to at the plant.
