Police officer convicted for running two red lights at over 150km/h in central Auckland

A respected police officer has been convicted for running two red lights in central Auckland in excess of 150km/h while pursuing a fleeing car.
A judge has described the man s driving as dangerous, noting that at that speed it would have taken 160 metres for the patrol vehicle to stop.
The law requires anyone using lights and sirens through an intersection not to exceed 20km/h.

“She noted that senior police officers have confirmed that so far as they are aware, there were no other police who were acting in the same way as Mr Taukolo,” the decision said.
Judge Neil Maclean said Taukolo spent his time in prison in protective custody due to the nature of his offending and was not able to access normal reintegration activities.

However, Taukolo had been able to produce a comprehensive release and safety plan.
Judge Maclean said Taukolo was now low-risk and had employment available to him.
“We reminded Mr Taukolo of the implications of the abstinence provision in terms of liability to being tested and/or monitored if and as required by a police officer and other authorised persons including his probation officer.” ....
