If only we could hit 20,000 it would be complete. Alas it did not happen. Many an investor was looking for a santa claus rally to come in and save the day. You get the idea, folks. Despite small gains, the dow could not claw its way above the 20,000 mark but the nasdaq did hit an alltime high. Heres how the dust settled. The dow climbed 11 points to 19,9 19,945. U. S. Output, is finally picking up. Growths domestic product expanded in the third quarter, ending september 30th at an annual rate of 3. 2 , its strongest growth in two years, held by solid consumer spending. Corporate profits rebounded for a Third Straight quarter. Separately, there was a surge in Consumer Confidence this month. Index rose to a nineyear high and expectations for the next six months were the most optimistic since june of last year. Later this week comes the jobs report, which most economists think will show a nation at or close to full employment. The bottom line, the u. S. Economy for all the campaign trail handwringing is a far cry from where it stood when the white house last changed occupants. And thats not all.
