Milwaukeeans honor Breonna Taylor, push for ban on no-knock warrants

Before Breonna Taylor was killed one year ago in Louisville, she had been asleep in her home an apartment that didn’t have any of the contraband police had come looking for.
Her death has led to marches and protests against police brutality and racism across the country. In Milwaukee on Saturday, dozens gathered in a small art studio on the city’s near south side for a celebration of Taylor’s life and to push harder for a statewide ban on no-knock warrants, which began the chain of events that ended in six bullets hitting Taylor.
“Being a Black person working in a system that isn’t designed to operate for me – how do I maneuver through that?” Tiffany Henry, the president of the Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals, asked the crowd. “How do I teach people that this policy has to reflect me? Because it could be me. I sleep at night.” ....

Breonna Taylor to be honored one year after police fatally shot her

Everyone is invited, said event organizer Brittany Vulich, founder of Break the Silence of the Burbs.
The vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the prayer garden at Advent Lutheran Church, W63 N642 Washington Ave.
Taylor was a 26-year-old Black woman who was an emergency medical technician with goals of becoming a nurse.
The slogan for the event is Say her name.
She (Taylor) has not received justice, said Vulich.  There is no justice, and we want to continue to honor her memory. She was a beloved community member.
The event will include an opening prayer by the Rev. Alexis Twito of Advent Lutheran Church, opening comments by Port Washington High School student Aleysha Will, a review of Taylor s life and legacy by Bianca Shaw of the Black Equity and Policy Institute;  a cover of Rise Up by William Tony, a member of NAACP-Ozaukee County;a closing prayer by the Rev. John Timothy of New Life Church-Grafton; and a community circle facilitated by Erica Tu ....

Milwaukee artists honor Breonna Taylor, urge ban on no-knock warrants

On March 13 of last year, six bullets from a Louisville, Kentucky, police officer’s gun ended the life of a promising emergency room technician with aspirations of becoming a nurse.
On the anniversary this Saturday of Breonna Taylor’s death, Milwaukee’s activists and artists will celebrate her life by honoring the city’s first responders and health care workers dedicated to saving lives.
“I know from being on both sides of the call, first responders respond to emergencies when not in uniform as a moral code of conduct and that alone is worthy of honor,” said Robert Agnew Jr., 33, co-founder of Milwaukee Artists for Racial Justice and an EMT student. “All professions are not created equal, and we want to let the first responders know, we see them, support them and to keep going.” ....
