Virginiaâs senior U.S. senator toured the 415,000-square-foot complex, guardian of countless American cultural treasures, for nearly an hour. Just minutes into his whirlwind tour, Warner responded with a big âwow!â when told that philanthropist David Woodley Packardâs donation of the custom-built facility stands as historyâs second-biggest private gift to the federal government, after the Smithsonian Institution.
