ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday dismissed the petition of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) member of the National Assembly Ali Nawaz Awan challenging former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s victory in recent Senate elections.
Mr Awan cited Senator-elect Gilani, his son Ali Haider Gilani and the chief election commissioner as respondents in the petition, which was heard by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah.
The petition stated that the general public and the contesting candidates were concerned about fair and transparent elections. Due to this, President Dr Arif Alvi sought opinion from the Supreme Court about holding open vote to elect senators instead of secret balloting. The apex court held that the ECP was duty-bound to conduct honest, fair and just elections in accordance with the law and to ensure that corrupt practices were guarded against.
