Sullivan s Travels: Local Relay for Life takes to the road this year
This year’s Relay for Life of Natick, Framingham, Sherborn, Ashland and Holliston is hitting the road.
According to Lewis Glass, one of this year’s organizers, plans call for a “Rolling Relay,” starting at Dover-Sherborn High School, then on to Natick with a finish in Framingham.
There will be an FM transmitter to broadcast the ceremonies in each location and “on the road” between locations.
Organizers are also planning a modified luminaria ceremony using lawn signs, as well as live entertainment along the route, a car decorating contest, and a scavenger hunt. ....

Sullivan's Travels: Natick begins planning for Memorial Day

Sullivan s Travels: Natick begins planning for Memorial Day
The calendar may read April, but Natick is already making plans for Memorial Day.
Like last year, there will be no “traditional” parade. Instead, there will be a car parade through town, with stops at the cemeteries and the Town Common.
There will also be a stop at the Indian Burial Ground on Pond Street, where the Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a re-internment ceremony for Alexander Quapish, a Praying Indian who fought during the Revolutionary War.
Also, the annual Transfer of Flags will be held virtually this year.
Details will be announced in the coming weeks. ....

Sullivan's Travels: Something different for 4th celebration this year

Sullivan s Travels: Something different for 4th celebration this year
The Friends of the Fourth have announced that there will be no parade this year.
“There are many factors that led to our decision, including the uncertain timeline for the vaccinations, return to larger gatherings, the safety of our parade participants and attendees, and the financial obligations involved in putting on a traditional parade,” the Friends said in a release last week.
“We understand how important this tradition is to many residents and this year, we wanted to offer something for the holiday weekend. We are thinking outside the box, and planning to have a Float House contest with scavenger hunt. The Float House idea came to us from the amazing photos out of New Orleans for Mardi Gras this year. ....

Sullivan's Travels: Honoring the town's 'quiet man,' Pat Young

Sullivan s Travels: Honoring the town s quiet man, Pat Young
That’s Pat.
That’s Pat.
That’s Pat as well.
For more than four decades, Pat Young was the quiet man in the background, organizing events and making sure everything was in place.
Sadly, Young died on Feb. 14, less than a week before a veterans square would be dedicated to him and his family.
The ceremony took place on Feb. 20 at the corner of Vermont Avenue and Connecticut Street, in front of the place the Young family has called home for decades.
The square honored Francis Young, who served in the Army during WWII, and his two sons, Patrick and James, who served during Vietnam. Patrick served in the Coast Guard, while James served in the Navy. ....
