GREENVILLE Five people appeared in Darke County Common Pleas Court on Thursday to be arraigned on indictments. Judge Jonathan P. Hein presided.
Elijah Cook, 22, of Greenville, was arraigned on one count of possession of MDMA, a fifth-degree felony. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 12 months, and a maximum fine of $2,500, neither of which are mandatory. Cook pleaded not guilty and was appointed a public defender. He was granted an OR bond and his next appearance is scheduled for May 17.
Sean Flatter, 38, of Greenville, faces 24 months in prison and a $5,000 fine, if convicted, two counts of illegal use of food stamps, both fifth-degree felonies. He pleaded not guilty and retained his public defender from a previous case. Flatter was granted an OR bond and his next appearance is scheduled for April 19, which is a combined date with another charge against him. ....

ARCANUM Arcanum Village Council met Tuesday evening to discuss grants, the hiring of a new police officer, and the first-quarter fire department report. All council members were present.
Tammy Bruner informed council that the Arcanum Preservation Society has its next meeting on April 21 to discuss further developments with the old city building. Bruner noted that the group needs paperwork signed to move ahead with plans. ....

GREENVILLE Scotty J. Reineke, 37, of Bradford, appeared in Darke County Common Pleas Court on Monday via video uplink from the Lorain Correctional Institute, where he is currently incarcerated for violating his post-release control when he was previously released from prison.
Reineke was sentenced to three years incarceration with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for failing to register his address after previously being convicted on sexual-related charges. In June of 2015, Reineke was convicted on numerous counts of disseminating matter harmful to a juvenile and pandering obscenity involving a minor. From this, he was sentenced to almost four and a half years in prison. ....

DARKE COUNTY Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Troy, Ohio) visited the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Mo., on Monday to express his concern with the nearly 500,000 backlogged veterans record requests. As a result of COVID-19, the NPRC has been understaffed and unable to process record requests in a timely manner, which has led to major issues regarding veterans benefits that include medical care, service awards, military honors at funerals, student loan and mortgage assistance, and other services for veterans facing homelessness, even COVID-19 vaccines.
The NPRC closed over a year ago, and has been sporadically working at a very limited capacity, at times as low as 25 percent of their usual staffing. The result is that veterans are waiting inordinate periods of time to access benefits they earned while serving, and some have been buried without honors becau ....
