Kerry was alive in the early hours of Saturday with the sounds of thousands of people coming together in locations all across the county as they walked from ‘darkness into light’ to help raise vital funds for the suicide prevention charity, Pieta House.
Nathan’s Walk – the name given to Killarney’s Darkness Into Light walk in aid of suicide- and self-harm-prevention charity Pieta – is back for the 12th time this Saturday (May 6), and if its launch at JM Reidy’s in the heart of the town this week is anything to go by, numbers for Saturday will be right up there with previous editions.
The official launch of live registration for Nathan’s Walk, Darkness into Light 2023 – which will be in aid of Pieta House – will take place early next month at J.M. Reidy s on Tuesday May between 7 and 9pm and will be hosted by Brendan Fuller with various guest speakers will be present on the night also.
Tomorrow morning, the Darkness Into Light walk will take place across the country. Each year, the sunrise walk raises awareness of suicide and fundraises to support suicide prevention.
Because of Covid-19, we will not see crowds gathering in their thousands as we usually would. Instead, Pieta House is asking people to get out before sunrise and do the walk in their social bubble.
In the month of May, which is Mental Health Month, it is one of the most successful fundraisers for the charity. The Killarney leg alone in Co Kerry has raised over €500,000 since 2011. Known as Nathan s Walk , it was the first branch of Darkness Into Light to be hosted outside of Dublin.
