Award-winning journalist Natasha Senjanovic explained her process for reporting on stories of sexual assault and domestic violence during the pandemic at a virtual event Wednesday. The “Surging in Silence: Domestic and Sexual Violence in the Pandemic” event was hosted by the Magazine, News and Digital Journalism department at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. In October 2020, Senjanovic began work on the project Surging in Silence, a series of articles covering stories of domestic abuse in Tennessee, which she said increased during pandemic stay-at-home orders. ....
GRANTEE Natasha Senjanovic is an award-winning reporter and former news anchor who covers vulnerable populations, including survivors of domestic and sexual violence, at-risk youth, migrant workers, and educators. Born in the former Yugoslavia, she spent 15 years in Rome covering the Italian film industry, including as senior editor at Cineuropa and Italy critic for The Hollywood Reporter. She was a contributing editor and translator for the bilingual geopolitical magazine EastWest before moving to Tennessee to become the afternoon host for Nashville Public Radio (WPLN). Her most recent work has appeared on NPR, WPLN, The Daily Memphian, and WKNO. She speaks four languages and her work has been honored with numerous AP awards and a Regional Edward R.
