involved in the investigation and the man s friends and coworkers are now receiving treatments. reporter: the 25-year-old man lived on treasure island, and worked here at the va hospital at lands end. the question is, how did he become infected. the unidentified researchers worked in building 2 here for the last six months. he was part of a research team at the va hospital, looking to develop a vaccine for the bacteria that causes a deadly bloodstream infection, or meningitis. the researcher reportedly began experiencing symptoms, such as a headache, chills and fatigue. it was only about 18 hours. reporter: the chief of infectious disease at the va hospital told us the researcher dies from the same bacteria he had been studying. it caused him to develop a skin rash, similar to this photo, all over his body. friends brought him to the emergency room on saturday, but it was too late. hospital officials said they gave antibiotics to the people in close contact with h ....
