Tennessee Nathan Bedford Forrest bust museum exhibit opens to public


By 1905, as a museum placard indicates below the Thomas portrait, there was a public debate about removing it.
We insist that its appearance on the walls of our State Capitol has long been a source of discomfiture to thousands of Tennesseans, someone wrote in a letter to the editor of the Nashville American in April 1905.
That year, the Tennessee House passed a resolution to remove the Thomas portrait from the Capitol and place it in the possession of Gates P. Thruston, who also served in the Union Army and was vice president of the Tennessee Historical Society.
The Senate rejected the measure. ....
