Drug-related deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador nearly doubled in 2023 over the previous year, according to the latest numbers, with cocaine being the main culprit.
In the past week, there have been five suspected drug-related deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the province's chief medical examiner warns those numbers are only going up.
St. John’s lawyer Bob Buckingham says Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Nash Denic can recommend a public inquiry, but never has. Seamus Flynn was 35 at the time of his death. He was taken by ambulance from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary on the evening of Dec. 1 and was pronounced dead early the next day. The CBC’s Ariana Kelland reports.
